We’re all Christians. In this article, I’ll be showing you some techniques and tricks on how to control your thoughts as a Christian. These techniques can really help you live a happier more meaningful life, filled with joy and contentment.
How to control your thoughts bible verses
Most Christians wish there was a magic word to stop thoughts from running through their head. There is no such word. This article will teach you how to control your thoughts as a Christian.
Matthew 6:34
Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
~Matthew 6:34
Don’t worry about tomorrow, we are told in this Bible verse, because God knows what is best for us and the future will be taken care of itself.
Worrying is a waste of time that accomplishes nothing. It surely won’t keep awful things from happening.
Worry will rather make you feel worse. Instead, concentrate on trusting and believing on God today and leave tomorrow to its own devices until it arrives.
Philippians 2:4-5
Let each of you look out not only for his own interests but also for the interests of others. Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus.
~Philippians 2:4-5
Don’t be concerned about what others may think of you. You will lose the battle before it even begins if you do so.
It’s normal to want to be liked and accepted by others.
However, if we are overly concerned with what they think, we may miss out on opportunities to develop and evolve into our full human potential.
Hebrews 12:1-2 NIV
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
~Hebrews 12:1-2
The book of Hebrews contains a remarkable list of people who have been praised by God for their faith.
It’s a list of named and unnamed men and women who lived lives that honored the Lord.
Men like Abraham who sought out a city whose Builder and Maker was God, and women like Sarah who believed God would keep His promise.
They are referred to as “a great cloud of witnesses,” and their lives exhibit a faith in God that is a magnificent testimony to God’s faithfulness in their lives, as well as a great encouragement for us to run the race that lies ahead of us and press on for God’s high call as we look to Jesus.
Philippians 4:8-9 NIV
Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.
~Philippians 4:8-9
It is possible to be happy. It is something we create rather than something that occurs to us.
If you want to be happy, you must concentrate on the positive aspects of your life.
You will attract more good energy into your life if you practice focusing on the positive parts of your life.
This is one of the reasons why optimistic individuals are happier than pessimistic ones: their positive ideas attract more positive things into their life because they concentrate on them.
How to control my thoughts as a Christian
Control is, in essence, the ability to limit your behavior. Because being able to control yourself allows you to avoid making mistakes and helps you achieve your goals. To be successful at controlling my thoughts as a Christian, I need to know what I’m allowed to think about and what thoughts are harmful. Here’s how I can do it.
Philippians 4:7
And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
~ Philippians 4:7
As Paul wraps up his letter to the Philippians, Paul encourages us all to live godly lives and to put all our thoughts into God’s work and meditate on all the spiritual principles we learned from him and also put into practice.
As a Christian, we must learn to control our thoughts and our life in a way that is acceptable to the Father and honorable to the Son and that God’s incomprehensible peace will protect our hearts and govern our minds in Christ Jesus our Lord.
The peace of God and good thoughts will be experienced by those who choose prayer and trust during times of distress.
There is one significant advantage to this peace. God’s peace is supernatural and unfathomable. It’s very astonishing how God can and will respond in terrible situations.
Philippians 4:8
Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
As Christians, we must accept responsibility of controlling our thoughts as we walk in spirit and truth, living as unto the Lord, trusting in God’s Word, relying on our Heavenly Father, surrendering to the Holy Spirit, dwelling in Christ, and claiming everything that is ours in Him by faith.
But we can only achieve this if we fix our thoughts and heart on Christ, which is why we are told to control our thoughts and imaginations throughout Scripture.
We’re told to give every thought over to the Lord, to let the mind of Christ dwell in us abundantly, and not to let our hearts’ ideas rule us.
While God watches over our hearts, we are also obligated to conduct lives and control our thoughts in ways that please God.
Colossians 3:1
If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.
In this Bible portion, Paul is seen giving these Christians some excellent Christian living advice.
Knowing that we are positioned in Christ Jesus, identified with Him, part of a new creation in Christ, raised up with Christ Jesus, and seated with Him in heavenly places, we must control our thoughts and think on things above only.
We must continue to seek after heavenly things and not yearn for earthly things – to set our hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at God the Father’s right hand.
Colossians 3:2
Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.
~ Colossians 3:2
The apostle Paul makes us understand and also explain why believers should change their thought and concentrate on the eternal and things that are above.
Because Christ is above, Christians ought to set their minds above. Christ is at God’s right side, not on the earth or in the grave. Jesus and the early church taught this consistently.
Paul is calling those who are born of the Spirit to keep their hearts and minds focused on heavenly things rather than earthly pursuits and interests because we have been raised up into a new life in Christ.
Another reason we should change our thoughts is that we are Christ’s spiritual seed, and we have become a brand new creation; we have exchanged our former earthly residency for glorious new citizenship, which is reserved for us in heaven.
Colossians 3:5
Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:
~ Colossians 3:5
Because we have died and our life is hidden with Christ in God, it is critical that we focus our minds on the things above.
As Christians, we have the option of submitting to our old sin nature or controlling our thoughts and living as unto the Lord.
We have the option of walking in carnality or in spirit and truth. Let us choose to live godly lives in Christ Jesus, putting away the old sin nature of idolatry.
Remember that we are being prepared for our heavenly home and that when Christ, our life, appears, we will also appear in glory with Him.
Isaiah 26:3
You will keep perfectly peaceful the one whose mind remains focused on you, because he remains in you.
~ Isaiah 26:3
When our thoughts and heart are fixed on the Lord, His perfect peace calms the soul and fills the heart with joy.
This is also true of the church today since when Christians set their hearts and minds on Christ Jesus, they are inundated with an indescribable calm, a flawless peace that can only be found in heaven.
When a sinner accepts Christ as his savior, he is clothed in Christ’s righteousness and finds peace with God.
Colossians 3:12-14
Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.
~ Colossians 3:12
Paul gives a list of lifestyles that Christians should avoid. He outlines methods of living for Christians to follow in this verse.
A loving heart is the first beneficial habit Paul recommends. This is a response to God and people that is characterized by love and care rather than selfishness.
Paul also mentions kindness. Believers are to be kind one to another, which God emphasizes throughout the Bible.
All these can only be achieved when we have a change of thoughts and think about things that are above only.
How to control your mind as a Christian
If you’re a Christian, one of the hardest things you can control is your mind. I’ve been there and am still there right now. To succeed in life and be successful as Christian, we need to learn how to control our minds better. Many people get sucked into adverse environments because they can’t control their minds. This is why they end up getting trapped in negativity and situations that hurt them mentally and physically.
2 Timothy 2:22
Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.
~ 2 Timothy 2:22
Paul warns Timothy, his son in the faith, to stay away from evil thoughts and to avoid the many lusts of the flesh, eye temptations, and heart passions that are aimed to keep us from communion with our heavenly Father.
Timothy is also given a list of things to watch out for as he grows in faith. Righteousness, faith, love, and peace, as well as those who call on the Lord from a pure heart, said the list. The first four are personal characteristics. The fifth is fellowship with other devout Christians.
“And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the practice of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as the Day draws near,” says Hebrews 10:24–25.
1 Timothy 6:11
But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.
~ 2 Timothy 2:22
Timothy is not just warned to avoid the desire for money and the practices of false teachers, as 1 Timothy 6:3–10 explains.
He is instead urged to “flee” from them. Joseph took this counsel to its logical conclusion when he fled away from a married woman who was seeking to seduce him (Genesis 39:7–12). Timothy, like Joseph, must utilize whatever tactics are required to avoid these traps.
In contrast to the defects of false teachers, Paul encourages Timothy to pursue six positive qualities: righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness (meaning endurance), and gentleness. Many of these characteristics are similar to those listed in Galatians 5:22–23 as the fruit of the Spirit.
3 John 1:11
Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. He that doeth good is of God: but he that doeth evil hath not seen God.
~ 3 John 1:11
As God’s children, we are to think, speak, and act like our heavenly Father.
We who have been born of the Spirit are to be merciful and loving.
Our Father in heaven is tender-hearted, long-suffering, full of mercy, and immense goodness, and we are to resemble his character and traits.
We are to respect others, offer hospitality, and grow in grace. But we must also avoid evil and not be frightened by those who seek to raise themselves by browbeating their Christian brothers and sisters.
To whoever we come into touch with, Godly love for our brothers in Christ is a witness of God’s grace, Christ’s love, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit.
How can I take control of my thoughts?
Control is, in essence, the ability to limit your behavior. Because being able to control yourself allows you to avoid making mistakes and helps you achieve your goals. To be successful at controlling my thoughts as a Christian, I need to know what I’m allowed to think about and what thoughts are harmful. Here’s how I can do it.
Proverbs 4:23
Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.
~ Proverbs 4:23
Controlling your thoughts and feelings is within your ability, although it does not always come easy.
Working on your mental health will teach you how to regulate your thoughts and feelings.
It’s difficult to think clearly and make wise judgments while you’re experiencing unpleasant emotions like worry or rage.
You may not even notice your emotions are interfering with your ability to think clearly until someone points it out to you.
Controlling your ideas and feelings requires learning to modify your viewpoint on things.
Because mindfulness is an awareness of one’s own inner experiences as well as external ones, being mindful is also a way of controlling your thoughts.
How to have godly thoughts
In this day and age, it’s nearly impossible to avoid noise. Everyone has a voice; everyone is trying to get their message out. So how do we keep our focus on what matters most? By having Godly thoughts.
Proverbs 23:7
For as he thinks within himself, so he is. He says to you, “Eat and drink!” But his heart is not with you.
~ Proverbs 23:7
The source of a person’s behavior is his or her inner ideas. We must think about God in our hearts if we wish to be Christians who make Godly decisions.
Every day, we must read God’s Word. Many examples of how we should live and treat others may be found in the Bible. It also demonstrates what God requires of us.
Reading the Bible will assist you in developing godly thinking by demonstrating how God desires you to conduct your life.
Praying frequently helps connect us with God, allowing Him to steer our lives according to His will (1 John 5:14).
When we pray, it keeps us focused on the things of God rather than the things of this world, which helps us avoid circumstances where sin may occur (Matthew 6:25-34; Colossians 4:2-6).
To think of Godly ideas, you must first comprehend what God thinks and feels. You need to be able to perceive things from His perspective.
The power of your thoughts sermon
The Bible says that we cannot judge others by our own standards. It’s important to remember this and not just judge others based on our thoughts and opinions of them, which then leads to harsh judgment.
James 4:7
Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
~ James 4:7
Your thoughts have more power than you may realize. Your health is influenced by how you think and feel about yourself, others, and the environment around you.
For instance, if you are continually thinking negative ideas like “I am obese” or “I never get anything right,” your health is likely to suffer.
You might have a variety of symptoms, including stress-related ailments including high blood pressure, heart disease, and depression.
This can have a big influence on your quality of life and your capacity to operate in everyday life. That is why we have been asked to resist the devil and he will flee from us.
It’s vital to remember that, no matter how terrible things appear at times, you have power over how you think and feel about yourself, others, and the world around you.
